Nathan Swartz was born in 1902 in Odessa, in a family of shoemakers. He was the fourth generation of craftsmen, learning from an early age how shoes connect people to the roads they walk.
As Europe became unstable, his family moved to the United States. In Boston, young Nathan became an apprentice in a shoe factory, working 10–12 hours a day. These years taught him that true craft should meet innovation.
First Steps in Business
In 1952, Nathan bought half of the Abington Shoe Company, a small factory in Massachusetts. Three years later, he bought the rest, becoming the sole owner. Together with his sons, Herman and Sidney, he turned the factory into a family business, focusing on durable, waterproof footwear.
The Breakthrough
Nathan realized that shoes for outdoor work had to survive rain, mud, and cold. His team developed a seamless connection between the rubber sole and leather upper, reinforced with triple stitching. The result: boots that were waterproof and extremely durable.
