Apple Hill 2026: What to Eat, See and Do This Fall

There are places where fall does not begin according to the calendar. It starts with the smell of fresh baked goods, apple cider, warm donuts, and baskets filled with apples picked straight from the orchard. For Sacramento residents, Apple Hill near Placerville has long been one of those places.

In early September, the main 2026 season officially got underway. Farms, orchards, bakeries, and wineries are welcoming visitors again, and KCRA has already described the first September weekends as the beginning of the true fall atmosphere at Apple Hill.

Apple Hill is not just one farm or one market. The Apple Hill Growers Association brings together dozens of family owned farms, orchards, bakeries, wineries, and small producers. Visitors can pick apples themselves, buy fresh baked goods, walk through orchards, taste cider, visit craft fairs, and simply spend an entire day outdoors.

For Sacramento residents, this is also an especially easy day trip. The Placerville and Camino area is about an hour away, which means Apple Hill can easily become a full family outing without needing to stay overnight.

One of the best known stops is High Hill Ranch. The farm is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is famous for homemade apple pies, fresh apple donuts, and fritters. Families can also enjoy hayrides, pony rides, face painting, and other activities for children. A large craft fair with more than 60 vendors is also part of the experience.

If you are visiting Apple Hill for the first time, High Hill Ranch can be a good place to start. You can immediately get a feel for the season, try some baked goods, walk around, and then decide what you want to explore next.

Another place worth adding to your route is Delfino Farms in Camino. Joan’s Apple Bakery serves seasonal treats, while Edio Vineyards offers hard cider and wine. Visitors can also walk along a nature trail and see farm animals. Sheep, ducks, chickens, goats, and rabbits make this stop especially appealing for families with children. During the fall season, the farm welcomes visitors from Friday through Monday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

If you want to do more than simply buy apples, consider Pine O Mine Ranch. The farm offers seasonal U pick apples, flowers, and pumpkins. There is also a children’s play area, games, picnic space, and cider shakes. Beginning in September, the farm is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Apple Hill is especially worth visiting right now because of the combination of food and atmosphere. Apple Ridge Farms, for example, makes desserts using apples grown in its own orchard. Seasonal favorites include apple pies, apple donuts, cider, and apple butter.

But one of the biggest mistakes first time visitors make is trying to see every farm in a single day. It is much better to choose three or four stops and enjoy them without constantly rushing from one place to another.

A good route could look like this: start the morning at High Hill Ranch, continue to Delfino Farms, visit Pine O Mine Ranch after lunch, and finish the day with a smaller stop for cider, pie, or local farm products.

Another important recommendation is to arrive early. In September, and especially in October, Apple Hill becomes extremely popular. Weekend traffic between Placerville and Camino can get heavy, and parking lots near the most popular farms often fill quickly.

If your schedule allows it, a weekday visit is usually much calmer.

Before leaving home, it is also worth checking the official Apple Hill Growers website. There you can find the current map, a list of open farms, hours, and an event calendar. Organizers also remind visitors that seasonal products and U pick availability can change depending on the harvest.

September also brings special seasonal events. Starting September 12, the Hard Cider Trail connects several Apple Hill farms that produce their own hard cider. The Flower Trail is scheduled for September 20, making it a particularly good time for photos among blooming farms and gardens.

What should you try first? Every Apple Hill regular probably has a different answer, but the classics are a good place to begin: a fresh apple donut, a warm apple pie, apple cider, and a caramel apple.

And it may be wise not to plan a strict diet for the day. Apple Hill has a surprisingly convincing way of explaining why one donut is really just a warm up.

Apple Hill is also great because the experience can be tailored to almost any group. Families with children often choose farms with animals, playgrounds, and hayrides. Couples may prefer wineries and cider tastings. Photography lovers head for orchards, flowers, and fall colors. Those who prefer a quieter experience can explore smaller family farms farther away from the busiest stops.

The season lasts much longer than just a few weeks. High Hill Ranch, for example, plans to remain open through December 24. Pine O Mine Ranch continues into mid December, while some Apple Hill wineries and farms remain open throughout the year.

Still, September and October are the months when Apple Hill looks and feels exactly the way most Northern Californians imagine it.
